The Self-Care Guide For Working Women

A working woman in today’s world often faces challenges whether single or married, a mother or not.

Due to gender roles, women frequently take on additional responsibilities at home, strive to balance motherhood and career, and navigate the unique obstacles of professional life.

And where does all of this lead? Emotional burnout. *Women experience burnout at significantly higher rates than men.

Burnout directly affects employee health and wellbeing, leading to decreased productivity and overall job satisfaction.

Why Self-Care Matters

In the midst of balancing responsibilities at home and work, taking time for wellness and prioritising employee wellbeing is not a luxury – it’s a necessity.

Of course, many of the challenges working women face require broader societal support mechanisms. But even with busy lives, there’s still so much we can do. Creating opportunities for self-care and wellbeing is not just a personal responsibility but a powerful step towards better mental and physical health.

Turning self-care into a habit and making small moments part of a daily routine is incredibly valuable. Studies repeatedly show that *self-care activities help reduce stress and enhance overall wellbeing.

Looking after ourselves can have a profound impact on our mental health and overall wellness.

What Does Self-Care Mean?

Yes, acts of self-care can include facials, manicures, pedicures and hair treatments, but true self-care goes far beyond beauty routines.

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines self-care as:
"The actions individuals, families, and communities take to maintain health, prevent disease, and cope with illness, with or without the support of a healthcare provider."

Where to Begin?

The first step is recognising what we need right now. Answering the following questions can help identify our wellbeing priorities and inspire self-care practices that truly serve us:

Self-Reflection Table

QuestionYour Answer
• What has been draining me the most lately? (Is it physical or emotional?)
• What do I do to relax?
• Am I spending enough time with people who uplift me?
• When was the last time I made time for myself?
• During which moments of the day do I feel the happiest?

Self-Care Activities for Wellbeing

Now, let’s try incorporating an activity that supports our self-care.

Culinary Experiences: Cooking a delicious meal, trying a new recipe, or exploring different cuisines can uplift the body and soul. Mindful eating and healthy food choices can support our physical wellbeing and provide us with energy throughout our workday.

New Habits and Hobbies: Stepping outside our typical routines, picking up a new hobby, or learning a new skill can support our mental wellbeing. For instance, painting, writing, or learning a new language can be enriching and relaxing.

Nature and Movement: Going to the gym may not always be possible, and strict exercise routines can sometimes feel overwhelming. A brisk walk in the park, a bike ride along the seafront, or simply stretching outdoors can be just as revitalising for mental and physical wellbeing.

Relaxation and Meditation: Taking time for ourselves mustn’t always involve doing something. Sometimes, simply sitting in silence can be transformative. Meditation, breathing exercises, reading, or even embracing moments of stillness can be incredibly restorative for mental wellness.

A Day Without Plans: Planning can make life easier, but letting go of control over every aspect of our day can invite in discovery and delight. Going with the flow and seeing where the day takes us can be a refreshing break for the mind and body, positively impacting our overall wellbeing.

Social Support and Seeking Help: Caring for our health and wellbeing also includes knowing when to ask for support. Seeking help from corporate employee wellbeing programmes, professional counselling, or simply talking to someone understanding can make a world of difference.

Wishing you many moments of self-care and holistic wellbeing along the way!
